hill of crosses - Lithuania

The Hill of Crosses is situated in Siauliai, Lithuania. When anyone imagines the Hill of Crosses, they imagine a huge hill festooned with crosses. But it is in fact nothing more a couple of small mounds that comes to life as you wander through the crosses, lost in them.

It appears that crosses started to appear back in the middle ages, but not until 1850 is their any written record and these seem to have been placed in the memory of the victims of the 1831 rebellion against the Russians. From around the 1930's the hill became a symbol of the peoples faith.

In 1961, the Soviet government bulldozed the hill where now over 5000 crosses stood. In 1975, they repeated the bulldozing as another 1,200 crosses had reappeared. Today, the estimate is in the hundreds of thousands.

The Hill of Crosses is now far more than just a site of religious worship, but has become a powerful testament to Lithuania's fight for Independence.
